The Refugio del Gavilán is run by Don Adrian Gavilanez and his family. Their small scale organic farm and private reserve is located in northwestern Ecuador in the Mache-Chindul Ecological Reserve, which is is apart of the Chocó-Magdalena biodiversity hotspot that stretches from northwestern Ecuador, through the Pacific coast of Colombia and into southern Panama. This forest is home to a suite of unique species that can only be found in this forest type and thus it is considered one of the world’s top ten biodiversity hotspots. Unfortunately, this region as a whole has experienced extensive deforestation causing many of these rare species to be endangered. Today, less than 5% of this biodiversity hotspot remains.

Don Adrian and his family are dedicated to conserving this beautiful natural forest and sharing this wonderful natural resource with the world. We invite you to help Don Adrian conserve his land by visiting the Refugio on either a homestay or volunteer visit.

“Traveling to the Refugio was an incredible, and quite frankly life-changing experience. Adrian and Fanny were extremely accommodating and generous (I was never hungry), and Zoe made sure everything went smoothly from start to finish. (more…)
